Management in Zeiten der Pandemie ändert alles – und gleichzeitig bleibt alles beim Alten. Was passiert da gerade mit uns?
Viel wichtiger ist die Frage: Was machen wir daraus? Eben das beleuchte ich ab heute in vielleicht täglichen, wahrscheinlich eher unregelmäßigen Updates an dieser Stelle. Es geht um uns, um mich, um Management in ungewissen Situationen, bestimmt irgendwann um Solidarität und Demut, schon heute um die Chancen von Home Office, Online Learning und New Work – und vor allem um Themen, die wir jetzt noch nicht benennen können. Denn das ist Zukunft: Das unentdeckte Land.
Digitales Lernen und Arbeiten – wer hätte das gedacht?
Das Thema Online Learning und Digitalisierung der Arbeitswelt haben Bund und Länder schon lange auf dem Schirm. Zum Beispiel sorgt der Bund beim DigitalPakt Schule dafür, dass an rund 43.000 Schulen in Deutschland schnelle Internetverbindungen sowie eine leistungsfähige digitale Lern-Infrastruktur entstehen. Insgesamt ist die Digitalisierungsstrategie in fünf Handlungsfelder, aber leider eben auch auf verschiedene Digitalräte, Kommissionen, Ministerien und natürlich auch auf alle Bundesländer verteilt.
Es geht voran, könnte aber eine oder zwei Ideen schneller ablaufen – und plötzlich: Corona. Unternehmen trommeln Teams ein letztes Mal persönlich zusammen, richten Arbeitsgruppen ein und bereiten sich auf das Arbeiten über Präsenzgrenzen hinweg vor. Wobei hier Arbeitsgruppe mal nicht das Synonym für „Ablage“ ist, denn es muss schnell gehen und tasächlich passieren. Heute ist Samstag, ab Montag trifft man sich am Bildschirm. Welche Tools nutzen wir? Hat jede von uns alle notwendigen Ressourcen zur Verfügung? Wie lief der erste Testlauf? Und vor allem: Was kann, selbst bei vollem Zugriff auf sämtliche Dateien und Mails, überhaupt erledigt werden?
Und es geht noch weiter: Nach der Digitalisierung der Zusammenarbeit kommt die Digitalisierung nach Außen. Haben wir unsere Kunden schon verloren? Was können wir gerade jetzt für sie tun – und zwar digital? Soziale und kulturelle Dienste, wirtschaftliche und rechtliche Beratungen, Gesundheitsdienste und viele andere Services werden sich in den kommenden Wochen aus der Not entwickeln – und das ist gut so. Nachbarschaftshäuser, Arztpraxen, Behörden, Kulturbetriebe sind unverzichtbar. Das Virus zwingt sie, darüber nachzudenken, wie sie ohne physische Sozialkontakte wirksam, erfolgreich und lebensfähig bleiben können.
Ein großes Paket haben die Schulen vor sich, die – gehemmt durch Kompetenzwirrwarr – bereits Millionen in den Sand gesetzt haben. Nun schaffen Lehrerinnen, Eltern und Schüler innerhalb von Tagen eigene, robuste Online Strategien, ganz ohne wolkige Konzepte oder Rufe nach Geld (ich selbst bin in zahlreichen Messenger-Gruppen und Mailverteilern zum Thema). Was ist da an Tools? Welche Papieraufgaben können wir noch mitgeben? Was wird in den nächsten Tagen und Wochen am Bildschirm erledigt. Der spannendste Feldversuch an Schulen der letzten Jahrzehnte, ganz ohne Kommissionen und Kultusministerien. Liebe Schülerinnen und Schüler, Lehrkräfte und Eltern – ich drücke Euch von Herzen die Daumen! Ihr erlebt nicht nur eine spannende Zeit – ihr gestaltet sie.
P.S.: All das schreibe ich als Vater zweier Mädchen und in anderen Lebensrollen in vollem Bewusstsein der Gefahren und Ängste, die natürlich auch eine Rolle in diesem Szenario spielen. Uns werden private und unternehmerische Insolvenzen ebenso begegnen wie schwere Krankheitsverläufe, Todesfälle und Vereinsamung. Auch ich habe Angst. Eben deshalb: Lasst uns Verantwortung zeigen, Zuversicht üben und gemeinsam nach vorne blicken.

Management in times of pandemic changes everything – and at the same time everything remains the same. What is happening to us right now?

It’s about us, about me, about management in uncertain situations, certainly at some point about solidarity and humility, already today about the opportunities of Home Office, Online Learning and New Work – and above all about topics that we can’t name yet. Because that is the future: the undiscovered country.
Digital learning and working – who would have thought it?
The topic of online learning and digitalisation of the world of work has been on the agenda of the federal and state governments for a long time. For example, with the Digital Pact for Schools, the federal government is ensuring that fast Internet connections and a powerful digital learning infrastructure are established at around 43,000 schools in Germany. The digitisation strategy is divided into five fields of action, but unfortunately it is also distributed among various digital councils, commissions, ministries and of course all the federal states.
Things are progressing, but could run one or two ideas faster – and suddenly: Corona. Companies are rounding up teams one last time in person, setting up working groups and preparing for working across presence boundaries. Whereby working group is not a synonym for „filing“, because it has to be fast and happen in real time. Today is Saturday, from Monday onwards, people meet on the screen. Which tools do we use? Does each of us have all the necessary resources at our disposal? How did the first test run go? And above all: What can be done at all, even with full access to all files and mails?
And it goes even further: After the digitalization of the cooperation, the digitalization comes to the outside. Have we already lost our customers? What can we do for them right now – digitally? Social and cultural services, economic and legal advice, health services and many other services will develop out of necessity in the coming weeks – and that’s a good thing. Neighbourhood houses, doctors‘ surgeries, public authorities, cultural services are indispensable. The virus forces them to think about how they can remain effective, successful and viable without physical social contact.
The schools have a big package ahead of them, which – inhibited by a confusion of competences – have already ruined millions. Now teachers, parents and students are creating their own robust online strategies within days, without cloudy concepts or calls for money (I myself am involved in numerous messenger groups and mail distribution lists on the subject). What are the tools? What paperwork can we still provide? What will be done on screen in the next days and weeks. The most exciting field test at schools of the last decades, without any commissions or ministries of education. Dear students, teachers and parents – I keep my fingers crossed for you! You are not only experiencing an exciting time – you are shaping it.
P.S.: I am writing all of this as a father of two girls and in other life roles, fully aware of the dangers and fears that naturally play a role in this scenario. We will encounter private and corporate insolvencies as well as serious illness, death and isolation. I too am afraid. That is precisely why: Let us show responsibility, exercise confidence and look ahead together.
